Originally called "Newtown", Wadesboro was renamed in 1783 to honor the service of Colonel Thomas Wade in the Revolutionary War. Wadesboro is the county seat for Anson. Scenes from Steven Speilberg's "The Color Purple" were filmed in and around the town.
